Ageless Anthem
By Jeanine Izzo
They are younger than me
They don’t know what I know
They have to pay their dues
They want to change everything
I can’t believe the future lies in their hands
They are older than me
They don’t know what I know
They protect information like their life is at stake
They are set in their ways
I can’t believe they’ve been doing it the same way this long
They are younger than me
They have fresh ideas
A lot of energy
Not a lot of baggage
They can help me be more agreeable to change
They are older than me
They have the wisdom of experience
A steadiness
A history of events to draw upon
They can help shorten my learning curve
When we work together, willingly and respectfully…
We bridge the gap between too stodgy and too risky
Our collective ideas are stronger
Our differences will ultimately lead to more success
The future becomes more exciting and sustainable
Forward Moving Tips:
If you are on the older side:
- Remember what it was like to be young
- Think about the ways you were able to contribute early on
- Acknowledge the strengths you have now as well as the gaps
- Be able to communicate these and seek support for growth areas
- NOTE: You’re never too old to learn
If you are on the younger side:
- Realize that you too will become the older ones in the workforce
- Think about how you would like to be treated
- Know how you can add value right now and what areas you can grow into
- Be able to communicate these and seek support for growth areas
- NOTE: There is no age requirement for making a big impact
Never before has their been such a wide range of ages in the workplace…from new grads to baby boomers that are not retiring as early as predicted. There are immense opportunities within this landscape as long as we emphasize the benefits of differing perspectives to rise in unison.
