Icky Sticky
by Jeanine Izzo
Everyone has icky sticky days. Days when your energy drags and you wish you could go back to bed. It’s going to happen…it’s part of life. Since you can’t always pull the covers over your head, below are some tips to help you pull through to silky smooth days.
Forward Moving Tips:
- On a good day, make a list of actions you can take to increase your energy/mood on bad days.
- Accept that there are times when you will feel weight on your shoulders. Ignoring, or attempting to defy the weight can make it last longer.
- Think about what is going well…no matter how small it seems, it helps you tap into possibility.
- Reduce (or eliminate) outside energy drainers. Many times, helping others helps us…yet when your head is not in the game, it’s okay to postpone some activities and interactions.
- Appreciate those who support you. Instead of taking out your frustrations on them, be grateful.
- Do what you normally enjoy, yet don’t feel like doing right now. Take an item from your list of energy generators (see #1 above).
- Alter your expectations of yourself. Give yourself a break. When you try to push through at full speed when you are not feeling well, you can prolong your recovery.
- Know that the experience is here for a purpose. Even though it’s not a comforting thought when you’re in the middle of said experience, it can ultimately help with your state of mind.
- Look for small wins and moments of levity (laughter) within the thick of the icky sticky.
- Reach out to others for support…or a temporary distraction.
- Listen when you don’t feel like listening…and when you don’t agree with what is being said…don’t refute…just listen and stay open. When your mood shifts, even slightly, these ideas may prove instrumental in furthering your progress.
- Keep stepping forward…it’s the only way to get through to the other side
When you are having a smoother day, take notice. Take notice of your own good fortune and also of the struggles others might be experiencing. Who knows…you might be the one that helps them get to a better place.
